When Law Meets Leadership: Real-World Lessons from Mumbai’s Legal Powerhouses

Legal education reaches its full potential when classroom concepts are tested against real-world complexity and there’s no better place to explore this intersection than at the heart of India’s legal and corporate capital: Mumbai.

While participating in the IIMUN’s Law Tour to Mumbai, powered by Parul University, our students were able to interact at a personal level with some of the most powerful names in the profession. The experience proved to be a complete learning experience that combined observations from both legal chambers and corporate boardrooms.

Part of the tour highlights was an engaging session with Ms. Sakshee Kumar, Senior Manager 1 - FDI & Antitrust Investigation, Flipkart Group, a veteran who knows how to walk that tight rope between law, policy, and corporate governance in India's largest e-commerce ecosystem.

Corporate Legal Strategy in Action: Insights from Flipkart

With her in-depth experience of foreign direct investment rules and competition law, Ms. Sakshee Kumar gave students a glimpse into the day-to-day functioning of a well-oiled legal team within a high-velocity tech company like Flipkart.

Ms. Sakshee Kumar emphasized learning about the operations of companies, harmonizing law with the needs of customers, being attentive to competition in the market, building teamwork, and considering failures as learning experiences.

"Be collaborative and be open to learning," was what Ms. Sakshee Kumar advised.

She encouraged students to go beyond formulaic legal thinking and instead suggest an adaptive, business-like mindset where communication, flexibility, and inquisitiveness are given as much importance as legal expertise.

A Career Constructed at Intersections: Law, Policy, and Market Realities

Ms. Sakshee Kumar's path is proof of the way the legal world is transforming in the corporate sector. As part of Flipkart, she deals with regulatory issues across FDI, competition law, and market policy while ensuring business continuity and compliance across jurisdictions. Her work experience at the crossroads of regulatory strategy and commercial operations was a living example for students on what practicing law outside of courtrooms entails.

She motivated young minds to accept uncertainty, pose finer questions, and above all never cease learning.

From Classroom Concepts to Career Clarity

This law tour did not only provide exposure it provided transformation. Through serious interactions with professionals such as Ms. Sakshee Kumar, students gained understanding on how their legal education could be converted into impactful careers not only as litigators but also as in-house legal strategists, policy advisors, or compliance leaders in India's thriving corporate arena.

A fine legal mind does not merely read the law. It applies it with vision, acts with integrity, and speaks with conviction.
