We think of a newspaper as writing and editing. But turning a finished story into millions of physical copies is a feat of industrial engineering. In the second half of Day 2, Parul University journalism students went behind the scenes at Hindustan Times for a technical walkthrough of exactly how a page becomes a printed newspaper, a process, they learned, that depends as much on machinery and precision as on the news itself.

The Three Stages of Production

Newspaper production breaks into three basic sections, each a distinct handoff:

  • Pre Press: The digital page is prepared and converted into a physical printing plate.
  • Press: The plates print the pages onto paper at high speed.
  • Mail Room: Printed sheets are bundled into distributable copies for delivery.

Page Becomes a Plate!

The Pre Press stage is where digital becomes physical. Pages released by the editorial team are first checked by controllers, then processed by software called RIP, which converts a full-colour PDF into four separate files, one each for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, the four inks of the CMYK colour model used in commercial printing. Those files go to a CTP (Computer to Plate) system, which produces a separate printing plate for each colour. Students even learned the chemistry: CTP plates are coated with a light-sensitive photopolymer and exposed using a violet laser at 405 nanometers, triggering a reaction (polymerization) that hardens the plate’s surface before the plate is preheated to around 115 degrees Celsius to stop the reaction and be readied for the press.

Inside the Pressroom

The scale of the actual printing is hard to picture until you see it. The Hindustan Times prints on a Colorman press made by MAN Roland of Germany, with three presses running at a rated speed of 90,000 copies per hour. Two presses run three printing units each (producing 24 full-colour pages), while the third runs four units (extending to 32 full-colour pages). The specifications students heard underline the engineering involved: a maximum press speed of 13.2 metres per second, a maximum paper reel width of 1,397 mm, and a maximum reel diameter of 1,270 mm. This is journalism at an industrial scale.
