Design Entrance Exams and B.Des Admission Process: What to Expect and How to Prepare

If you are planning to study B.Des, however, the first challenge often comes before college starts: the design entrance exam. Many students hear words like aptitude test, portfolio and design round and immediately think they need professional-level drawing skills.

That is not always true. Design admission is often more about showing how you see and solve a problem.

There is no single exam pattern followed everywhere. The exact sections and marking system can change depending on the programme. Still, design aptitude tests commonly look at a few basic abilities:

• Observation
• Visual thinking
• Creative thinking
• Problem-solving

Some tests may also include logical reasoning, general awareness, drawing or written questions. Always read the latest admission instructions for the programme you are applying to rather than depending on an old preparation guide.

The process can differ, but students may come across some combination of these stages:

The test may check observation, reasoning, creativity, visual ability and design awareness.

Some admissions processes ask students to show sketches, projects, photography, craft work or other original creative work.

Your performance across the required admission stages is considered according to that programme’s selection rules.

Do not assume every college uses interviews or portfolios. Check the current process before preparing for a stage that may not even apply to you.

Start by changing the way you observe normal things.

Look at a water bottle and ask why its shape is comfortable to hold. Watch how people use a bus stop. Notice why one food packet is easier to understand than another. These simple exercises train the kind of observation that design needs.

You can also practise visual puzzles, patterns and basic reasoning regularly. Keep a sketchbook, but do not use it only for beautiful drawings. Draw objects from different angles, quickly record an idea or redesign something that does not work properly.

Timed practice also matters. A creative answer is useful only when you can communicate it within the available exam time.

A beginner portfolio does not need to look like the work of a professional designer.

Show how you think. For example, if you redesign your study table, include the original problem, rough ideas, measurements, sketches and final solution. Even a school poster or handmade object can become useful when you explain the thought behind it.

Original work is much more useful than copying polished designs from the internet. Your portfolio should help someone understand your interests, observation and process.

Parul University’s design route uses the Parul University Design Aptitude Test(PU-DAT). Its current preparation guidance says the test evaluates areas such as visual reasoning, observational thinking and design sensitivity rather than judging students only on polished drawing ability.

Students from Science, Commerce, Arts or Vocational backgrounds can apply for the B.Design route, subject to the stated programme eligibility.

Applicants register for PU-DAT, take the online aptitude test and upload their portfolio through the admission portal. Admission is then considered using PU-DAT performance, portfolio evaluation and seat availability.

The last week is not the time to suddenly learn advanced drawing.

Instead, solve a few timed aptitude questions each day. Review the portfolio you plan to submit and make sure you can explain why you created each project. Observe products, advertisements, rooms and public spaces around you and ask what you would improve.

Also check your application details, exam instructions and required documents early. A small administrative mistake should not become the reason for extra stress on exam day.

Before searching for another preparation book, pick one object around you that irritates you.

Maybe your school bag has a badly placed pocket. Maybe your desk has no space for cables. Sketch three ways you could improve it.

You may not create a perfect solution today. But the moment you begin observing a problem, questioning it and trying different answers, you are already practising the thinking that a B.Des entrance process wants to discover.
