GPAT Preparation Strategy: How to Plan Your Studies Effectively

53,617 candidates appeared for GPAT 2026, while 5,362 qualified, according to the official 2026 result notice. That means only around one in ten candidates came within the qualifying pool. (NBEMS)

For a B.Pharm student, this number can feel stressful. But GPAT preparation should not begin with fear about competition. It should begin with understanding your own syllabus, weak areas and the amount of revision you actually need.

Start by knowing where you currently stand.

Take one practice paper or a mixed set of questions before making a full timetable. This will show which subjects you remember well and where your concepts are weak.

Then divide your syllabus into three simple groups:

Revise regularly but do not spend too much time here.

Practise questions and strengthen unclear concepts.

Give these subjects more focused study time.

Keep facts, classifications, reactions and formulas in a separate revision list.

Your study plan should come from this analysis. Copying another student’s timetable may not help because your weak subjects may be completely different.

Different pharmacy subjects require different methods.

Pharmacology has many drugs, mechanisms and classifications. Instead of reading the same chapter repeatedly, create small tables showing drug class, action and major uses.

Pharmaceutics needs both concept understanding and numerical practice. Focus on why a formulation behaves in a certain way rather than only learning definitions.

Pharmaceutical chemistry can become easier when structures, reactions and medicinal uses are revised together. Pharmacognosy usually needs repeated revision because students have to remember sources, constituents and applications.

Subjects studied throughout B.Pharm may look familiar, but GPAT preparation requires faster recall. This is why revision should begin early instead of being kept for the final month.

Do not create a timetable where every hour of the day is already occupied. It usually becomes difficult to follow after a few days.

A more practical method is to divide your study into tasks.

For example, one session may be for learning a difficult topic. The next can be used for solving questions. A shorter session later in the day can be used for revising old material.

Also keep some extra time every week for unfinished work. If Monday’s topic takes longer than expected, you should have space to adjust it instead of allowing your entire plan to collapse.

Consistency matters more than making one perfect timetable.

Practice questions show whether you can actually use what you have studied.

Use previous questions to understand the kind of concepts that repeatedly need attention. Once your basic syllabus coverage improves, start taking full-length mock tests.

After every mock, check:

• Which questions were wrong because the concept was weak?
• Which mistakes happened because you forgot a fact?
• Where did you spend too much time?
• Did you guess too many answers?
• Which subjects are repeatedly lowering your score?

The test itself is only half the work. Analysing it is where you find what needs to change.

During the last stage, avoid trying to learn every remaining topic from the beginning.

Start reducing your notes. Convert long chapters into short revision pages containing formulas, drug classifications, important reactions and facts that you often forget.

Try mixed revision instead of studying only one subject throughout the day. GPAT tests your ability to move from one pharmacy area to another, so your revision should slowly train you to do the same.

Also protect your sleep before tests. Studying late into the night and then taking a mock test with poor concentration does not give a fair picture of your preparation.

As the exam gets closer, your notebooks should become shorter, your revision faster and your mock-test mistakes more familiar. When you reach that stage, preparation stops feeling like covering an endless pharmacy syllabus and starts becoming a process of recognising questions you have already trained yourself to handle.
