Importance of Mental Health Awareness

When students experience a headache, break an arm, or suffer from any physical illness, they feel pain in their bodies and usually seek medical help. However, when a person enters a state of depression, anxiety, or any form of mental distress, they also experience pain, yet often do not seek help. A mind suffering from mental disturbances makes one feel pain while simultaneously discouraging the person from talking about it.

This is one of the key reasons why mental health is one of the most important aspects of human life. Just like a plant kept in darkness begins to wilt and dry, the human mind also weakens when deprived of light, care, and expression. When the same plant is brought into sunlight, it regains strength and colour.

Similarly, the pain a student feels within the mind cannot be seen by others, making it easy to hide mental suffering. Issues such as depression, trauma, and anxiety grow stronger when hidden and slowly drain joy and happiness from life.

This is why it is important to express emotions and share one’s struggles with someone else. Allowing feelings to surface helps restore emotional balance and enables individuals to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.

It is often said that a problem shared is a problem solved. Recognising this, the World Health Organisation has dedicated the 10th of October as World Mental Health Day, emphasising the importance of maintaining mental well-being.

Many may wonder how to keep the mind healthy, and the answer is simple—find someone you trust and share your concerns with. In an age dominated by social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, people remain connected digitally yet often feel emotionally lonely.

True well-being comes not from being networked, but from being genuinely connected. Sharing thoughts with a trusted person and extending empathy to others helps spread positivity and may even save someone silently struggling.

Let us all remain connected with one another, remembering that a healthy mind leads to a healthy and balanced life.
