From Idea to Reality: Evaluating Startup Potential

April 17, 2026 | Anjali Shah |

1. Problem Clarity (Out of 10)

Can the founder explain the problem in clear, specific terms? If the problem statement is vague, the solution will be vague, and the business will struggle. The founder must describe the problem in two sentences that anyone can understand.

2. Problem Size (Out of 10)

How many people face this problem? Scoring logic: affects two people = 0 marks. Whole class = 4-5. Whole city or state = 6-7. 90% of the population = full 10 marks. A solution to a problem nobody has is not a business.

3. Problem Growth (Out of 10)

Is the problem getting worse over time? If shrinking, score is zero. If growing every year, score is high. Examples: skin issues and children’s phone addiction are measurably worsening. Always choose a problem that will be bigger next year.

4. Solution Need (Out of 10)

Will people actually use the solution? Sometimes a problem is real but people will not change behaviour. Example: a person with knee pain still wears formal shoes to office because of social norms. Another: if butter were packaged in a Fevicol glue stick, nobody would use it on bread because the association is too strong. If people will not use the solution, do not build it.

5. Problem Frequency (Out of 10)

How often does the customer face this problem? A ceiling fan breaks once a year. An RO filter needs servicing once a year. Subscription models fail for low-frequency problems. If the problem occurs 12+ times a year, recurring revenue is viable. If once a year, people will not keep the app on their phone.

6. Founder's Passion (Out of 10)

Does the founder genuinely care? Out of ten ideas, a founder might love only two or three. Without passion, the startup collapses under pressure. But passion alone is not enough. It must be matched with customer demand..

7. Solution Feasibility (Out of 20)

Can this be built with available technology, resources, and budget? Weighted at 20 marks because execution capability determines whether an idea becomes a product. An idea requiring non-existent technology scores low regardless of concept quality.

8. Unique Features (Out of 20)

What makes this different from competitors? If many companies already do this, rethink it. If only two competitors exist, there is room. Weighted at 20 marks because differentiation determines market survival.

How Students Applied the Scorecard

After learning the framework in a PIERC startup bootcamp, students scored their own ideas and presented them. The critical follow-up: why will your idea fail? One student pitched Campus Connect (hackathon teammate finder) but was challenged on privacy risk. Another pitched Sports LinkedIn but was challenged on how to verify athletes and prevent fraudulent profiles. A third pitched Ayurveda Skincare and was advised to sell through dermatologists because consumers trust doctor recommendations over unknown brands. The scorecard is a diagnostic tool that reveals where an idea is strong and where it needs work.

Startup process is all together a new challenge for the young entrepreneur and this is where the university helps through grants and approvals.
