CUET Preparation Tips for Science Students: A Simple Subject-Wise Study Plan

(The Indian Express) For a science student, this number can look scary. But preparation does not become better by studying for very long hours. It becomes better when those hours are used in the right places.

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology all test different abilities. So, using exactly the same study method for every subject may not give the best result.

First, students should clearly check the subjects required for the undergraduate courses they are planning to apply for. Once the subject combination is clear, preparation becomes easier to organise.

Start by making three simple groups: strong chapters, average chapters and weak chapters. Do not spend the first few weeks only studying favourite topics. Weak chapters need extra time because leaving many topics unfinished can create pressure near the examination.

A simple weekly plan can look like this:

• Keep daily time for one difficult science subject and one comparatively easier subject.
• Revise formulas, reactions and important facts for 20–30 minutes every day.
• Solve questions after completing a chapter instead of waiting for the full syllabus to finish.
• Keep one day every week for revision and checking old mistakes.

The purpose is not to make a timetable that looks impressive. Make one which you can actually follow.

Science subjects cannot be treated in exactly the same manner.

For Physics, first understand the concept and then practise numerical questions. Keep one small formula notebook and revise it often. If you repeatedly make mistakes in units, signs or calculations, note them separately.

For Chemistry, divide preparation between physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Numerical practice is useful for physical chemistry, while reactions and important facts need regular revision in the other areas.

For Mathematics, solving questions is more important than simply reading solutions. Practise with a timer because knowing a method and using it quickly are two different things.

For Biology, careful reading and repeated revision matter greatly. Create short chapter notes, diagrams and small tables for information which is easy to confuse.

A mock test should not only tell you your score. It should tell you what is going wrong.

After every test, check:

• Which questions were wrong because the concept was unclear?
• Which answers were lost because of calculation or reading mistakes?
• Which chapters are taking too much time?
• Are you attempting difficult questions while leaving easier questions for later?

This analysis is often more useful than immediately taking another mock test.

Keep a mistake notebook. Write only the important errors in it. Before the next test, spend a few minutes checking these mistakes. Over time, you may notice that many errors come from the same habits.

Students often think they need two completely different preparation plans. This can increase stress.

Instead, use the overlap in science concepts to your advantage. When you revise a Class 12 chapter, solve objective questions from the same topic afterwards. This turns one study session into both concept revision and entrance practice.

During busy school weeks, even two focused study sessions can be useful. Long study hours are less important than regular revision.

Also keep small breaks between difficult subjects. Studying Physics immediately after several hours of Mathematics may reduce concentration even if you are still sitting at the desk.

Preparation for an entrance examination is only one part of the journey. Students should also think about what kind of science learning they want after Class 12.

Reduce the time spent making new notes. Revise the notes you already have. Solve mixed questions so that your brain learns to move quickly between different chapters.

Most importantly, do not allow one difficult mock test to decide how you feel about your preparation. Use it as information. Find the weak area, correct it and move ahead.
