Dr. Dhvani Patel is a psychologist and the founder of the Vadodara Psychology Club, a community that connects students and practitioners in the region. She led a careers-focused session at Parul University’s Synapsoirée 2.0 .
The master's is where training begins!
Dr. Dhvani Patel pushed back on the common belief that a degree certifies a psychologist. While the bachelor’s lays the groundwork, the master’s is where the clinical training starts, she said, and even then, the degree is a license to continue learning, not the end. She explained that psychology comes in many branches: clinical, counselling, organisational, sports, forensic, and other branches; and that it is not one career but many.
Each client is like a textbook!
Her mantra was that each client was a textbook; supervised practice teaches more than any syllabus, and each person with whom a trainee works enriches their knowledge. She changed the mindset of the internship from being a mere procedure for completion to a learning phase where knowledge converts to skill and students are encouraged to select placements for knowledge acquisition and not for the sake of convenience. Her final words were practical: “Make community, find good supervision, be curious, and treat the entire early career as an apprenticeship.
