About Dr. Mitali Gupta

Dr. Mitali Gupta is a counselling psychologist licensed by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) and the founder of Psychology with Mitali. She led a hands-on workshop at Parul University’s Synapsoirée 2.0.

The ABC of REBT!

Dr. Mitali Gupta teaches the core of Emotive Behaviour Therapy. The ABC model, developed by Albert Ellis, shows that an activating event does not directly cause the consequence. It is the belief that sits between them that does. The main therapeutic move is to locate and challenge the beliefs that cause distress. She highlighted the difference in REBT between demands and preferences. Demands are musts and shoulds that cause suffering. Preferences are wishes that allow disappointment without feeling overwhelmed. To help concepts settle, she used Bollywood‑style roleplays. Students could spot beliefs in scenes they knew and practice reframing them.

REBT & Artificial Intelligence!

She then applied REBT to the issue of overreliance on AI. She argued that giving tools, not tasks, but judgment and reassurance can feed beliefs such as “I cannot cope on my own” or “I must be certain before I act.” REBT would call these demands that fuel anxiety. The solution, she said, is not to reject tools. Instead, keep ownership of one’s thinking by using REBT to stay flexible and self-reliant. The workshop left students with a method they could use that day on their own stuck thoughts. In Albert Ellis's Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy, an activating event (A) does not directly cause an emotional consequence (C); the belief (B) in between does. Therapy works by identifying and disputing the irrational beliefs that drive distress.

Dr. Mitali Gupta said that giving judgment and reassurance to AI can create demands, such as needing certainty before acting, and these demands can increase anxiety. She never wanted to reject AI tools; she said to keep ownership of one’s thinking and use REBT to stay flexible and self-reliant.
