Not all Artificial Intelligence is created equal. To make this clear, the Parul University AI training used a reference every student knew: Jarvis, the AI from Iron Man. Jarvis can do almost anything a human can, and more. The AI in your email or maps app cannot. That gap is exactly what the types of AI describe.
The three types of AI are:
1. Narrow AI (Weak AI / ANI)
Artificial Narrow Intelligence is built for a particular task and nothing beyond. It is specific and focused, which is why it is called Narrow AI.
Every AI system currently in use falls into this category. A spam filter, recommendation engine, chatbot, or navigation app is designed for a particular purpose. Each can perform its assigned task effectively but cannot automatically perform unrelated tasks. A chess AI cannot drive a car, and a translation app cannot diagnose a disease.
2. General AI (Strong AI / AGI)
Artificial General Intelligence refers to AI at a human-like level of intelligence across a wide range of tasks. Instead of being limited to one specific function, it would be able to understand, learn, and perform different intellectual tasks across multiple domains.
This is similar to the idea of Jarvis: broad, flexible, and adaptable. However, AGI does not currently exist as a confirmed real-world technology and remains a goal researchers are working towards.
3. Super AI (ASI)
Artificial Super Intelligence is a hypothetical next step: a type of AI that would surpass human intelligence across every field, from creativity and problem-solving to judgement.
Today, it remains theoretical. For now, it exists mainly in research discussions and science fiction rather than as a real-world technology.
Where We Actually Stand Today
Here is the key takeaway that cuts through the hype: all the AI you use today, however impressive, is Narrow AI. ChatGPT, self-driving features, and recommendation systems are all narrow, however advanced they may seem. General AI, such as a true Jarvis, and Super AI do not yet exist. Understanding this helps keep expectations grounded in reality.
AI by Function: Another Way to Classify
Beyond capability, AI is also grouped by what it does. The training mapped these to platforms students use daily:
- Natural Language Processing (NLP): Understanding and generating language, as in ChatGPT and translation tools.
- Recommendation Systems: Suggesting what you might like, as on Amazon and streaming apps.
- Computer Vision: Interpreting images and videos, as in face recognition and self-driving cars.
- Prediction and Classification: Anticipating outcomes and sorting data, as in Google Maps predicting traffic.
