Parul University recently conducted an AI training session to help students better understand what Artificial Intelligence is and how it works. The Global Certification Forum (GCF) Artificial Intelligence training for AI and ML students went beyond textbooks, with the trainer explaining concepts and definitions in simple, easy-to-understand language.

The training addressed one of the most important questions: what exactly is AI? This article explores the answers from the basic concepts to more advanced levels, giving a clear picture of what AI is and how it works.

Artificial Intelligence Training Session

The session addressed what AI is and how it is becoming an integral part of work today. Artificial Intelligence works on tasks where human intelligence was once required, such as understanding language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making, by making machines and computer systems capable of performing these tasks.

In simple terms, AI is about making machines capable of thinking and acting intelligently instead of just following fixed instructions. You are already using AI in your daily life: when Amazon and Flipkart suggest products, when ChatGPT answers a question, or when Google Maps predicts traffic, that is AI at work.

The Components That Make AI Intelligent

AI is not one single technology but a field made up of several building blocks working together. Some of the main components are:

  • Expert Systems: Basically, software built to make decisions the way a human expert in that field would.
  • Machine Learning (ML): Rather than coding every rule by hand, you feed the machine data and let it figure out the patterns itself.
  • Natural Language Processing (NLP): This is what lets a computer understand or produce human language. Think chatbots, translation apps, and similar tools.
  • Computer Vision: Teaching machines to make sense of what they are “seeing” in images or videos.
  • Knowledge Representation and Decision-Making: How a system holds onto what it knows and then uses that stored knowledge to decide what to do next.

How AI Mimics Human Intelligence

To understand AI, it helps to break down what intelligence actually is. The training described five components of intelligence: thinking and learning, reasoning, decision-making, prediction, and problem-solving. A memorable example made it concrete: imagine troubleshooting a laptop that will not switch on. A human reasons through it (is it charged? is the cable working?), predicts likely causes, and decides what to try next. An AI system is programmed to follow those same logical steps. AI, in other words, is an attempt to reproduce this human problem-solving process in a machine.

It matters today because it has become an integral part of modern life. With AI, the efficiency and quality of work have improved. Decision-making has improved, which has increased productivity, leading to discoveries and innovations in every industry. Work becomes easier, more effective and productive as the routine and data-heavy tasks can now be handled; it frees humans from time-consuming tasks, allowing them to focus on other important tasks that require creative output, research, problem-solving, and judgement.

Where AI Is Used: Real-World Applications

AI is no longer confined to research labs. It is deployed across industries, including:

  • Healthcare (diagnosis from medical images), Banking and Finance (fraud detection), and Agriculture (crop monitoring).
  • Transportation (self-driving and navigation), Manufacturing, and E-commerce (recommendations).
  • Education (personalised learning), Customer Service (chatbots), Entertainment, and Smart Cities.

What Powers AI: Infrastructure and Servers

AI does not run on ordinary computers alone. Training modern AI models requires serious computational power, powerful servers, and specialised processors (GPUs) that can process huge datasets, supported by cloud computing. This is why hands-on access to real hardware matters so much for learning AI.
